Best Lump Charcoal for 2023
-
There’s a wide world of charcoal out there, and we’d wager you’ve met your fair share of fellow grillers who swear by one brand or the other. We have a few favorites of our own, but before we stir up those embers, it’s worth noting that we deal almost exclusively in lump charcoal instead of charcoal briquettes. Little more than dense hunks of pure carbon, lump charcoal burns cleaner, ignites faster, and leaves behind far less ash than briquettes. More importantly, however, is the absence of fillers or additives commonly found in charcoal briquettes, which tend to produce unpleasant smells and even a chemical taste in food. It’s a no-brainer, if you ask us.
Though we prefer lump charcoal across the board, there are a few manufacturers whose fuel rules the rest. The selections listed below were made by our grill experts who’ve been testing and selling grills for more than 20 years — and on top of that, they all love charcoal grilling in their spare time. To say they’re “experienced” in the ways of lump charcoal would be an understatement.
